Istanbulkart is a reloadable smart card used for public transportation in Istanbul. You can use it on:

• Metro & tram lines

• Buses

• Ferries

• Metrobus (express bus system)

• Cable cars

• Funiculars

For most tourists, the Istanbul kart is the easiest and cheapest way to travel around the city.

Can You Return Istanbulkart and Get a Refund?

Unfortunately,no. There is refund for the Istanbul card itself. You can apply for refund of the balance, though.

Best Options for Visitors

1. Transfer Your Balance to a New Card

If you’re traveling with friends or family who are staying longer, you can transfer your balance using the Istanbulkart app or at selected kiosks. Simply:

• Download the Istanbulkart mobile app

• Pair both cards

• Transfer the remaining balance

It’s quick, and at least your money doesn’t go to waste.

2. Donate or Gift the Card

Many departing travelers choose to:

• Leave the card at their hotel for new guests

• Give it to a local friend or shop owner

• Donate it at tourist info centers or charity donation boxes (if available)

It’s a small act of kindness that could save someone time and money.

3. Keep It for Your Next Visit

Istanbulkart doesn’t expire. If you plan to return to Turkey (and you probably will!), hold onto your card. You can top it up again anytime — even online — and skip the long lines at vending machines.

You can check your balance by:

• Tapping at top-up machines (yellow kiosks at metro/tram stations)

• Using the Istanbulkart mobile app

• Checking it online via the official Istanbulkart website (istanbulkart.istanbul)

• Asking a station officer

Can You Get a Refund for a Broken Card?

If your Istanbulkart is damaged or malfunctioning, you can apply for a replacement — but this only works for registered cards. If you have a personalized Istanbulkart (with your name and photo), you may:

• Visit the Istanbulkart Office at Şişhane metro station or Karaköy Pier

• Apply for a replacement (card fee may apply)

• Transfer your balance to the new card

Visitors using anonymous cards cannot get replacements or refunds.
