If you are finishing your trip to Istanbul and still have money left on your Istanbulkart, you may be wondering whether you can return the card and get your remaining balance back.
The important point is that the physical Istanbulkart and the money loaded onto the card are treated differently.

Can You Return Istanbulkart and Get a Refund?
The amount you paid to purchase the physical Istanbulkart itself is normally not refunded.
Money that is still loaded onto the card is different. A customer can request repayment of some or all of the remaining electronic balance, subject to the current Istanbulkart procedure.
The refund process is not the same as returning a ticket to a Biletmatik machine. You may need to provide card information, customer details and payment or bank account information.

Can You Keep Istanbulkart for Your Next Trip?
Yes. If you expect to return to Istanbul, you can keep your Istanbulkart rather than trying to recover a small remaining balance.
However, Istanbulkart should not be considered a card with an unlimited lifetime.
Under the current terms, a card that has no loading or spending activity for an extended period can eventually be closed for use. Current terms provide for inactivity after 3 years without qualifying card activity.
If you expect to return to Istanbul before then, keeping the card can still be a practical option.
