Can You Share The Istanbulkart? Tips for Families & Groups

Updated for 2026: One Anonymous Istanbulkart can be used by up to 5 passengers. Each passenger must tap the card separately when entering the transport system.

Can You Use One Istanbulkart for Multiple People?

Yes. Up to 5 people can use one Anonymous Istanbulkart.

At the metro, tram, ferry or bus, tap the same card separately for each passenger.

For couples, families and small groups travelling together, this can reduce the number of physical cards you need to buy.

The process is simple. The first passenger taps the Istanbulkart and passes through the gate. The next passenger then taps the same card and follows.

Repeat this process for each passenger in your group, up to five people.

When Sharing an Istanbulkart Works Well

Sharing one Istanbulkart makes the most sense when everyone in the group plans to travel together.

Couples Two travelers who will use the same transport routes throughout their Istanbul trip can usually share one card easily.
Families Families travelling together can avoid buying several physical cards when one Anonymous Istanbulkart is enough for the group.
Small Groups Groups of three to five people can use the same card when everyone enters and exits transportation together.
Short Istanbul Trips Sharing can be particularly practical for a short two or three-day visit when the group will rarely separate.

When Should You Buy More Than One Istanbulkart?

Although one card can be used by five people, buying more than one card can sometimes make the trip easier.

1. If Your Group Will Separate

If some people want to visit a museum while others go shopping or return to the hotel, sharing a single Istanbulkart becomes inconvenient.

In that situation, having two cards gives the group more independence.

2. If You Use the Metro Frequently

At metro gates, every passenger must pass through individually. With five travelers, the same card has to be tapped five separate times.

This works, but having two cards can make busy stations easier to navigate.

3. If Different Travelers Need Different Cards

Student, discounted, free and other personalized Istanbulkart products are subject to their own eligibility rules and should not be treated like an Anonymous Istanbulkart shared by tourists.

4. If You Want More Flexibility

For a family of four, buying two cards instead of four can sometimes be a good compromise. Two passengers can use each card and the group can separate if necessary.

How to Share Istanbulkart Correctly

1
Tap for the First Passenger Hold the Istanbulkart over the reader until the payment is accepted and the gate opens.
2
Let the First Passenger Pass Allow the gate or validator to complete the first transaction before tapping the card again.
3
Tap Again for the Next Passenger Repeat the same process separately for every traveler.
4
Repeat for Up to Five People Continue until each passenger has completed a separate transport payment.
Do not try to pass two people through a turnstile using one tap. Every traveler requires a separate Istanbulkart transaction.

What About Istanbulkart Transfer Discounts?

This is where older Istanbulkart articles can be misleading.

Under the current Istanbulkart system, an unpersonalized Istanbulkart does not receive benefits such as discounted transfers and distance-based fare refunds.

These benefits are associated with eligible personalized Istanbulkart products. For most short-term international visitors using an Anonymous Istanbulkart, it is therefore better to think of the card primarily as a convenient way to pay for public transportation rather than as a way to receive every local transport discount.

Can You Share a Personalized Istanbulkart?

Personalized, student, discounted and free transportation cards should not be shared with other passengers.

These products can have benefits linked to a particular cardholder. Istanbul transport authorities monitor improper use of privileged transportation cards.

The sharing advice on this page refers specifically to the Anonymous Istanbulkart commonly purchased by tourists.

What About Children?

Children who qualify for free public transportation under Istanbul's current age rules do not need a separate Istanbulkart payment.

Older children travelling as regular fare-paying visitors can be included among the passengers using the shared Anonymous Istanbulkart.

Does Sharing Istanbulkart Save Money?

The main saving comes from not needing to purchase a separate physical Anonymous Istanbulkart for every person.

For example, a family of four staying in Istanbul for only a few days may decide to purchase one or two cards rather than four.

Current card prices and public transportation fares change periodically, so we keep the latest figures on the main Istanbulkart guide instead of repeating fixed prices on every child page.

How Much Balance Should You Add for a Group?

Remember that every person creates a separate fare transaction. If four people board a tram, the Istanbulkart will be charged four times.

You therefore need more balance on a shared card than a solo traveler.

Instead of adding a large amount at once, it is usually easier to add smaller amounts during the trip.

Can You Share Istanbulkart from Istanbul Airport?

If you plan to take the M11 metro, make sure the card has enough balance for each traveler before entering.

Can Cruise Passengers Share Istanbulkart?

Yes. This can be particularly useful for couples and families arriving at Galataport who want to use the T1 tram, metro or public ferries during a short visit.

Can You Give Your Istanbulkart to Someone Else?

An Anonymous Istanbulkart can be useful to another traveler when you finish your trip.

This is also an option if only a small balance remains on the card and you do not want to complete a formal refund procedure.
